Are Bananas Low FODMAP?
Depends on portion or type
It depends on ripeness. Firm, just-ripe bananas are generally low, and very ripe bananas are higher.
Main FODMAPs: Fructans (more as it ripens)
Why
As a banana ripens, its starch turns into sugars and its fructan content rises, so ripeness changes the FODMAP level. Firm, yellow-green bananas are generally better tolerated, and spotty, soft ones are higher.
Good to know
- Banana bread and smoothies usually use very ripe bananas, so they can be higher.
- Dried banana chips are concentrated, so portions matter.
- Check a current database for tested serving sizes.
Tips and swaps
- Firm bananas in a modest portion
- Blueberries or strawberries in a smoothie
