Frequently asked questions
Everything about how FODMAP Scanner works, what is free, and how to manage your account.
The app and pricing
What is FODMAP Scanner?
FODMAP Scanner is an iPhone and Android app that helps people following a low FODMAP diet for IBS. You can scan a barcode, photograph an ingredient label, or search a food by name to see whether it is likely to be high or low in FODMAPs.
Is FODMAP Scanner free?
The app is free to download and includes 3 ingredient scans per day (photo, gallery and barcode scans combined), one saved list, daily symptom logging and the Reintroduction Helper. Premium removes the scan and list limits and adds food search, the recipe library and symptom insights.
How much does Premium cost?
Premium pricing is shown in the app at checkout, and it may vary by country. Subscriptions are billed through your App Store or Google Play account.
Can I access recipes on the free plan?
Free users can scan a limited number of their own recipes, using a photo, a gallery image or pasted ingredients. Browsing and searching the low FODMAP recipe library requires Premium, along with unlimited recipe scanning.
Where do the recipes come from?
Recipes come from Spoonacular, a food and recipe database, and are filtered to match low FODMAP guidelines. Always review the full ingredient list for your own sensitivities.
Scanning and accuracy
How does the app decide whether a food is low FODMAP?
For packaged foods, the app reads the ingredients list and analyzes each ingredient against published low FODMAP research. Results are shown as None, Low, Moderate, High or Unknown, with notes on why. It is a guide, not a diagnosis, so always check the product packaging and speak with a doctor or registered dietitian about your own diet. Our article on reading a food label for hidden FODMAPs explains what to look for.
What do None, Low, Moderate, High and Unknown mean?
None means no significant FODMAP concern was found for a typical serving. Low means the food is generally well tolerated. Moderate means the result depends on serving size, so smaller portions may be fine. High means the food contains high levels of FODMAPs that may trigger symptoms. Unknown means the app could not determine a result, so verify the label or packaging.
Where does the barcode data come from?
The app checks its own product database first. If a product is not found, it searches Open Food Facts and USDA FoodData Central. When ingredients are available, they are analyzed for FODMAP content. Products already in the database may show saved results instantly.
What if a barcode does not scan?
If a product is not in the database, tap Scan ingredient label on the home screen and photograph the ingredients list instead.
Can I use it without an internet connection?
Scanning and analysis need an internet connection. Your saved lists, symptom history, product images and reintroduction progress are stored on your device so you can view them offline, and they sync again when you reconnect.
Can I edit a product after scanning it?
Yes. Tap any product in your list to edit its name, category, FODMAP level or notes, or to change its image.
Reintroduction and symptoms
What is the Reintroduction Helper?
After the elimination phase, the Reintroduction Helper guides you through testing one FODMAP group at a time. You choose a test food, challenge it with three increasing doses, and then take two washout days, logging how you feel along the way. Wheat fructans and onion or garlic are tested separately. Results update your dietary preferences so future scans can warn you. It follows published low FODMAP reintroduction methods, is not a diagnosis, and is included for all users. For background, read the three phases of the low FODMAP diet.
How do I track my symptoms?
Open More, then Symptom Tracker, and log symptoms daily with a severity rating and suspected triggers. Premium adds weekly trends, trigger patterns and recommendations. See our guide to keeping an IBS symptom journal for what to record.
Can I export my symptom data?
All users can view their symptom history. Premium users can export a PDF report to share with a healthcare provider. For other data requests, contact support@fodmapscanner.app.
Account, privacy and subscriptions
Is my health data private?
Your data is encrypted and stored securely, and we do not sell or share your health information. Symptom data is stored separately and can be deleted at any time. Read the full details in our Privacy Policy, or see how to delete your account.
I signed in but my data is missing. What happened?
Apple, Google and email sign-in create separate accounts. If you first signed up with Apple, including Hide My Email, and later sign in with Google, you will see an empty account instead of your original one. Sign out from More, then sign back in with the method you used when you first joined, which is often Continue with Apple with the same Apple ID.
How do I restore my Premium subscription?
Open More, then Restore Purchases, or use Restore Purchases at the bottom of the upgrade screen. Make sure you are signed in to the same App Store or Google Play account you used to subscribe, and to the same app account. If nothing is found, sign out and back in with your original sign-in method, or contact support@fodmapscanner.app.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed through your App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) account settings, and you can cancel at any time.
