Is Parmesan Low FODMAP?

Low FODMAP

Yes. Parmesan and other hard, aged cheeses are generally low FODMAP.

Main FODMAPs: Lactose (very low)

Why

Aging breaks down most of the lactose in hard cheeses, which leaves very little behind. Parmesan is a common way to add flavor to a low FODMAP meal.

Good to know

  • Check pre-grated blends and parmesan-style sprinkles for added ingredients.
  • Serving size still matters, since very large amounts add more lactose.
  • Cheese sauces and cream-based sauces are a different matter.

Ways to use it

  • Grate over gluten-free pasta
  • Sprinkle on potatoes or eggs
  • Add to salads
