Is Cow's Milk Low FODMAP?
Yes. Regular cow's milk is high in lactose, which is a FODMAP.
Main FODMAPs: Lactose
Why
Lactose is a sugar that needs the enzyme lactase to be digested. Many people with IBS make less lactase, so undigested lactose reaches the large intestine, pulls in water, and ferments. This happens with full fat, low fat, and skim milk, because the lactose is in all of them.
Good to know
- Lactose-free cow's milk is real milk with the lactase added, so it is generally well tolerated.
- Hard, aged cheeses are naturally very low in lactose.
- Cream and butter contain little lactose, but it depends on the amount.
Low FODMAP swaps
- Lactose-free milk
- Unsweetened almond milk or rice milk (check labels for added inulin or sweeteners)
- Lactose-free yogurt
