Is Cheddar Cheese Low FODMAP?
Low FODMAP
Yes. Cheddar and other hard, aged cheeses are generally low FODMAP.
Main FODMAPs: None in typical servings
Why
Lactose is mostly drained away with the whey and broken down during aging, so hard cheeses such as cheddar, parmesan, and Swiss contain very little. Fresh, soft cheeses such as ricotta and cottage cheese are higher.
Good to know
- Processed cheese slices and cheese spreads can contain milk solids or other additives.
- Check cheese sauces and snacks for garlic or onion.
Ways to use it
- Use in place of cream cheese or ricotta in sandwiches
- Grate parmesan over meals for flavor
- Pair with rice crackers
