Are Mushrooms Low FODMAP?
Most common mushrooms, such as button and portobello, are high in FODMAPs because of mannitol.
Main FODMAPs: Mannitol
Why
Mannitol is a polyol that your small intestine absorbs poorly. Common button (white), cremini, and portobello mushrooms contain it, which is why they can cause symptoms even in small amounts for some people. Some other types, such as oyster mushrooms, are generally reported to be better tolerated.
Good to know
- Mushroom powders and extracts in soups, gravies, and supplements can contain the same compounds.
- FODMAP content varies a lot by mushroom type, so check a current database for the one you eat.
Low FODMAP swaps
- Zucchini or eggplant in small servings, checked in an app
- Bell peppers
- Spinach or other leafy greens for earthy bulk in a dish
