Is Honey Low FODMAP?
High FODMAP
No. Honey is high in FODMAPs because it contains more fructose than glucose.
Main FODMAPs: Excess fructose
Why
Fructose is absorbed best when glucose is present in equal amounts. Honey has more fructose than glucose, so the extra fructose can reach the large intestine, where it draws in water and ferments. Even natural, raw, or manuka honey is affected.
Good to know
- Honey is a hidden ingredient in granola bars, cereals, sauces, and glazes.
- Agave syrup and high fructose corn syrup are high for the same reason.
- Some people tolerate a very small amount, which is something to test during reintroduction rather than guess.
Low FODMAP swaps
- Maple syrup, which is generally well tolerated in modest amounts
- Table sugar (sucrose) in small amounts, since it has equal fructose and glucose
- Rice malt syrup, where available

Good to know: FODMAP content varies with variety, ripeness, preparation, brand, and serving size, and everyone's tolerance is different. This page gives general guidance without exact serving thresholds. For tested serving sizes, check the Monash University FODMAP Diet app and talk to your dietitian.
