Is Agave Syrup Low FODMAP?
High FODMAP
No. Agave syrup is very high in fructose, which makes it high in FODMAPs.
Main FODMAPs: Excess fructose
Why
Agave is often marketed as a natural, low glycemic sweetener, but that is because it is mostly fructose. Fructose in excess of glucose is poorly absorbed by many people with IBS and can trigger gas, bloating, and loose stools.
Good to know
- Check labels on drinks, bars, and "natural" sweetened foods, where agave is common.
- Agave nectar and agave syrup are the same thing for FODMAP purposes.
Low FODMAP swaps
- Maple syrup in modest amounts
- Regular sugar in small amounts
- Plain, unsweetened versions of the food, adding a small amount of your tolerated sweetener yourself
