Are Apples Low FODMAP?
No. Apples are high in FODMAPs, and they combine two types: excess fructose and sorbitol.
Main FODMAPs: Excess fructose, sorbitol
Why
Apples contain more fructose than glucose, and they also contain sorbitol, a polyol that is poorly absorbed. Having two FODMAPs in one fruit is why apples are such a common trigger. Most varieties are affected, and apple juice and applesauce are high too.
Good to know
- Apple juice, apple juice concentrate, and apple purees show up in many "no added sugar" snacks.
- Dried apple is more concentrated, so a small serving can contain a lot.
- Pears are high for the same reasons.
Low FODMAP swaps
- Strawberries or blueberries
- Oranges or mandarins
- Kiwi or pineapple
