Is Cabbage Low FODMAP?

Depends on portion or type

It depends on the type and portion. Common green cabbage is generally low in modest servings, while savoy cabbage and larger servings are higher.

Main FODMAPs: Fructans and polyols (larger servings)

Why

Different cabbages contain different amounts of FODMAPs, and the serving size changes the answer. A modest portion of green cabbage is often tolerated, while savoy cabbage and very large servings are more likely to cause symptoms.

Good to know

  • Coleslaw dressings and sauerkraut brines may include onion, garlic, or sweeteners.
  • Raw cabbage is often harder on digestion than cooked, even when the FODMAP content is similar.
  • Bok choy is a good alternative if you want a milder option.

Tips and swaps

  • Bok choy
  • Spinach or kale
  • A slaw made from carrots and cucumber
