Is Avocado Low FODMAP?

Depends on portion or type

It depends on the portion. A small serving is generally low, but a whole avocado is high in sorbitol.

Main FODMAPs: Sorbitol

Why

Avocado contains sorbitol, a polyol, and the amount you eat matters a great deal. Small servings are generally tolerated, but a half or whole avocado can deliver enough sorbitol to cause symptoms. That is why avocado toast can be fine for one person and a problem for another.

Good to know

  • Guacamole is easy to overeat, especially with chips.
  • Ripeness can change how much you tolerate, so pay attention to how you feel.
  • Check a current database for tested serving sizes.

Tips and swaps

  • A thin spread of avocado rather than a whole fruit
  • Olive oil or a low FODMAP dressing
  • Hummus made without garlic, in a small serving
