Are Potatoes Low FODMAP?

Low FODMAP

Yes. Regular potatoes are low FODMAP.

Main FODMAPs: None in plain potatoes

Why

White, red, and russet potatoes contain no meaningful amount of FODMAPs, which makes them a reliable base for low FODMAP meals. Baked, boiled, roasted, and mashed potatoes are all fine on their own.

Good to know

  • Watch the extras. Garlic, onion, and dairy in mash or gratin can make it high.
  • Packaged mashed potatoes and flavored chips often contain onion or garlic powder.
  • Sweet potatoes are different, so see our guide.

Ways to use it

  • Mash with lactose-free milk and butter
  • Roast with olive oil and herbs
  • Use as a base in place of wheat-based sides
