Is Chocolate Low FODMAP?

Depends on portion or type

It depends on the type and portion. Dark chocolate in a small serving is generally low, while milk chocolate adds lactose.

Main FODMAPs: Lactose (milk chocolate)

Why

Dark chocolate contains little or no milk, so it is easier on most people. Milk chocolate and white chocolate contain lactose, and larger servings of any chocolate can add up.

Good to know

  • Fillings such as caramel, honey, or inulin can add FODMAPs.
  • Sugar-free chocolate often uses polyols such as sorbitol, maltitol, or xylitol.
  • Check labels on chocolate spreads and baking chips.

Tips and swaps

  • A small piece of dark chocolate
  • Dairy-free dark chocolate
  • Strawberries dipped in dark chocolate
