Are Cashews Low FODMAP?

High FODMAP

Yes. Cashews are high in FODMAPs, mainly galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and fructans.

Main FODMAPs: GOS and fructans

Why

Cashews are among the highest FODMAP nuts, along with pistachios. They contain GOS and fructans, so even a handful can be enough to cause symptoms. Cashew butter and cashew milk can be high too, depending on how they are made.

Good to know

  • Trail mixes and snack bars often include cashews.
  • Vegan "cream" sauces and cheeses are frequently cashew-based.

Low FODMAP swaps

  • Walnuts or pecans in small servings
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Peanuts (technically legumes) in a modest serving
